Several municipalities of the Republic of Srpska declared the epidemic of mumps due to the highly increased number of cases of mumps. Increased number of cases is recorded in the region of Banja Luka, Trebinje, Doboj, Bijeljina and Foča, while most patients are recorded in the region of East Sarajevo. An epidemic has not yet been declared in Tuzla Canton, but the number of patients who reported symptoms of mumps is higher than usual.
"At the Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Clinical Center Tuzla, daily record is seven to eight patients with symptoms of mumps. Mostly it affects children born during the war years, who were irregularly vaccinated. In recent days we have increase in the number of patients from other municipalities, such as Gradačac, Gračanica and Srebrenik. Sixteen patients have been hospitalized since January 2012, five patients are currently treated in hospital, while easier cases are treated as outpatients.” said Dr. Sana Šabović, specialists in infectious diseases, Clinic of Infectious Diseases, UCC Tuzla.
Mumps is the acute infectious disease caused by mumps virus. The onset of mumps is usually sudden, although it may be preceded by a period followed by general weakness and tiredness, loss of appetite, fever, chills, sore throat and sore in the lower jaw. A common clinical sign of disease is a painful swelling of salivary glands (called parotitis). Mumps are often thought to represent a child's illness. Although in the past occurred more frequently in children, today there is a greater risk of developing of the disease in adults of younger age. In adulthood, the clinical picture is usually severe and accompanied by serious complications. When mumps virus infection, in two thirds of cases both glands are infected. The most common mumps transmission method is through coughing, sneezing or speaking which can spread droplets of saliva and mucus infected with mumps virus. Also, the virus can be transmitted through unwashed hands or using items used by infected persons. Treatment is usually symptomatic, and the successful prevention is carried out by controlled vaccination. Occurrence of complications is possible and potentially serious, but also very rare. Vaccination against mumps is included in routine immunization, including immunization for measles, mumps and rubella. Children are vaccinated at the age of 18 months, and revaccinated in 3 to 6 years of age. Mumps mostly occurring sporadically throughout the year, while the occasional minor outbreaks are somewhat more frequent in winter and spring.

EUROPEAN CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION WEEK |
|
News

|

European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (ECCPW) was established in 2007 and since then is celebrated every year in the last week of January. The aim of this action, which will be held from 22 to 29 January 2012, is the promotion of knowledge about cervical cancer and its prevention methods. European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week is a pan-European public health initiative, which aims to raise awareness of women across Europe about what is cervical cancer, what causes it, how it is diagnosed, and what are the possibilities of its prevention. The initiative was launched by the European Cervical Cancer Association (ECCA), in partnership with the European health organizations, NGO, and pharmaceutical industries.
European Cervical Cancer Association launched the ECCA web site in the native language of the country where all information about its activities and information about cervical cancer are available to all its members. Also, it provides educational and promotional material, distributed during the week of prevention, for all countries. As part of its activities this year ECCA has launched two campaigns "STOP Cervical Cancer" the petition via the link “STOP Cervical Cancer "(http://www.cervicalcancerpetition.eu/) and campaign "The Pearl of Wisdom”.
Brooch "The Pearl of Wisdom" will during the week be shared to women across Europe, but also to all those who support the fight against cervical cancer. Brooch is a symbol of knowledge transfer and a petition aims to collect one million signatures, which would be submitted to the European Parliament in order to work on prevention programs in the future make mandatory.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women younger than 45 years and the third leading cause of death in women, after breast and lung cancer. Even in developed countries where the Pap smear is regularly applied for the early detection of cervical cancer, women are still dying from this disease. It is believed that the disease annually affects about 500.000 women and 270.000 of them die. While in Bosnia and Herzegovina there are no accurate data about a number of women who have a problem with this disease, the number of patients is around 24 at 100.000 of women.
"Cervical cancer can be caused by 13 high-risk types of Human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV can cause cervical cells to become abnormal and slowly develop into cancer. Thanks to the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Association we have unified criteria related to prevention, respectively we have defined the target group of women specified by age group, and clearly defined methods of screening and therapeutic approach. Cervical cancer is rare before the age of 25. Thus, the target group are women aged 25-65 years of life.” said Prof.Dr.Ermina Iljazović, head of the Institute of Pathology, University Clinical Center Tuzla. She also added that when we talk about prevention of cervical cancer, we must be aware that this is a highly preventable disease. Preventing cervical cancer can be achieved primarily by regular follow-ups by your gynecologist, active immunization and analysis of cytological smears from the cervical area, known as the Pap smear.
"If a doctor during the examination notices that the cervix looks abnormal, the Pap test is not sufficient, and it is necessary to take a sample of tissue (biopsy) for analysis, because there are cases when the Pap test will not show abnormal cells while a tumor is present. Even when the Pap test indicates the presence of abnormal cells it is also necessary to do a biopsy to determine what kind of the cells is about. “, said Prof. Dr. Iljazović.
Risk of cervical cancer begins with sexual activity of woman, and about 80% of sexually active women in one period of life can be infected with some of the types of HPV, of which 15 are of high risk. All the aforementioned points to the importance of regular gynecological examinations, because cervical cancer, if detected in time, can be cured with great success.
