During the year 2018, the University Clinical Center Tuzla acquired modern technical equipment for the preparation of cytotoxic drugs. Actually, it is a closed system device in which all substances and materials needed for the dissolution of drugs must be sterilized before preparing cytotoxic drugs, that is the dissolving of a cytotoxic drug to each patient individually.
” The equipment we have acquired is an enclosed area to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for staff working on the preparation of cytotoxic drugs and to prevent contamination in adjacent areas. Moreover, this equipment provides strictly defined microbiological and microenvironmental conditions for the aseptic drug preparation practice.
This is a big step forward towards a better health service for our patients and the occupational health and safety for our medical and non- medical staff in setting of occupational exposure to cytotoxic drugs.” said prim. mr. ph. Katica Mišić, head of the Hospital Farmacy, and explained that cytotoxic drugs are classified as dangerous to humans because of their carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity. Exposure to even very small amounts of certain drugs may be hazardous for staff ( pharmacists, pharmaceutical technicians and nurses) who handle them or work near them, especially if this happens continuously over a long period of time.
