Leading expert in Uniportal VATS visits to Clinical Center Tuzla

Dr. Diego Gonzales- Rivas MD, FECTS, a leading expert in video- assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is in a a professional visit to the University Clinical Center Tuzla.

Dr. Diego Gonzales Riva is pioneer surgeon in the world performing uniportal VATS anatomic resections. VATS is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to diagnose and treat conditions in the chest. During the VATS procedure, a tiny camera (thoracoscope) and surgical instruments are inserted into the chest. The procedure is performed through one small incision of 4-5 cm in the chest.

For several years already, minimally invasive surgery has been performed in the University Clinical Center Tuzla. In 2016 VATS method had been introduced into surgical program. Our team of surgeons has independently performed this method since March, 2019.

Uniportal VATS resection has many advantages for the patient’s fast recovery for the lung resection is being done through single small incision compared to classic open thoracic access and conventional VATS that are being performed through 3-4 longer incisions.

Prof. Dr. Zijah Rifatbegović, surgeon and head of the Clinic for Surgery on the occasion said that team of surgeons has been continuously dedicated to improve techniques in the field of minimally invasive surgery. So far, they have performed seven surgeries by using uniportal VATS method.

Dr. Diego Gonzales- Rivas is currently thoracic surgeon in Coruña University Center, Spain. He created and now is the director of the Uniportal VATS training program. He trained more than 500 surgeons from 72 countries in this uniportal program.

During his stay, Dr. Diego Gonzales- Rivas will deliver lecture on the theme “Uniportal VATS major lung resection”. In addition to that, he will perform several surgeries together with Dr. Visar Xhaferi. Doctors from the University Clinical Center RS will also attend this interesting medical event that is organized within 2nd Balkan Tour 2020 on the theme” Masterclasses in Minimally invasive Thoracic Surgery Uniportal VATS”.
