A roundtable discussion on the topic “Challenges in Liver Transplantation” was held at the University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC Tuzla). On this occasion, members of the liver transplantation team from the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb (KBC Zagreb) visited the Center as part of efforts to enhance the liver transplantation program in Tuzla.
The primary goal of the visit was to support the development and improvement of the transplantation program at the University Clinical Center Tuzla through the exchange of knowledge and best practices.
During the roundtable, participants discussed several key aspects of liver transplantation, including the development and experience of the liver transplantation program at the University Clinical Center Zagreb, organizational structure, candidate evaluation and preparation, anesthesia protocols, surgical procedures, and post-transplant patient monitoring.
A presentation on the current state and challenges of organ transplantation in Bosnia and Herzegovina was delivered by Prof. Dr. Zijah Rifatbegović, providing important insight into the national context of transplantation medicine.
The moderators of the round table were Prof. Dr. Predrag Jovanović, Prof. Dr. Jasmina Smajić and Prof. Dr. Zlatan Mehmedović. According to the Head of the Department of Surgery at KBC Zagreb, Prof. Dr. Davor Mijatović, KBC Zagreb is the leading healthcare institution in the transplantation program in Croatia. In addition to liver transplantation, this institution successfully performs kidney, heart and lung transplantations. “The University Clinical Center Tuzla has a reputation as a top healthcare institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the cooperation that KBC Zagreb has with this prestigious institution is extremely important to us. KBC Zagreb, as the leading transplantation institution in the Republic of Croatia, has been recognized by the management of UKC Tuzla, and today we are here to further improve mutual cooperation in the field of liver transplantation through this form of education. In the last five years, we at KBC Zagreb have significantly improved the liver transplantation program and are ready to provide all necessary assistance in the education of UKC Tuzla staff,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Mijatović.
As part of the visit of the transplantation team from the Clinical Hospital Center (KBC) Zagreb, Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, Director of the University Clinical Center (UKC) Tuzla, hosted a formal reception for the delegation. During the meeting, discussions were held regarding the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the two healthcare institutions.
One of the key points of discussion was the plan for UKC Tuzla medical staff to undergo practical training at KBC Zagreb, with the aim of enhancing their expertise and clinical skills in the field of liver transplantation.

This meeting further solidified the foundation for long-term collaboration between the two institutions, with a shared vision of advancing liver transplantation services in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
