The Clinic for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation of the University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC Tuzla), in cooperation with the Association of Anesthesiologists and Resuscitation Doctors of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and under the auspices of the Medical Chamber of Tuzla Canton, is organizing the Ninth School of Obstetric Anesthesia.
According to Prof. Dr. Jasmina Smajić, Head of the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation at UKC Tuzla, the educational program in the field of obstetric anesthesia was launched in 2017 in collaboration with the American non- governmental organization Kybele. “The School of Obstetric Anesthesia has been continuously organized since its inception, with the exception of one interruption during the COVID-19 pandemic. The education and training we have received through these schools have led to significant improvements in our daily clinical practice. Since the implementation of this project, 90% of cesarean sections at UKC Tuzla are performed under spinal anesthesia, and we have achieved major progress in the management of labor pain,” emphasized Prof. Smajić.
Prim. Dr. Dobrica Simić, coordinator of gynecological anesthesia at UKC Tuzla, expressed his gratitude to Kybele and Prof. Dr. Ivan Veličković for their long- standing cooperation and contribution to education, adding that expectations remain high for this year’s school to be just as successful as the previous ones.
During their visit, the American team of physicians will conduct a five- day workshop aimed at introducing participants to the latest techniques and methods in anesthesia. The program focuses on enhancing procedures performed during regional anesthesia and labor analgesia, with the goal of improving the safety and quality of surgical interventions.
“We hold an annual meeting in the United States that brings together professionals from across the country, from the north, south, east, and west, to exchange new knowledge and practices. That meeting takes place every May, and each November we visit countries in the Western Balkans to share our experiences and present the latest anesthesia guidelines,” said Prof. Dr. Ivan Veličković, anesthesiologist at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, New York, USA.
In addition to Prof. Dr. Veličković, the educational team includes Dr. Mohamed Ismail and Dr. Rohan Sharma, both specialists in anesthesiology.
The Ninth School of Obstetric Anesthesia will bring together 14 participants from UKC Tuzla and 11 anesthesiologists from other healthcare institutions across the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
