The First School of Breast Ultrasound Diagnostics commenced its work at the University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC Tuzla) on December 10, 2025, as part of the continuing medical education program.
The primary goal of the School is to enhance the quality of ultrasound diagnostics and provide modern, comprehensive education for physicians. Under the expert supervision of a mentor, ten participants will gain knowledge about the latest advancements in the use of ultrasound in the diagnosis of breast diseases.
The School is organized by the UKC Tuzla, in cooperation with the Medical Chamber of the Tuzla Canton, and will take place from December 10 to 19, 2025.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanifa Fejzić, a radiology specialist from the Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and head of the School, highlighted that between 11 and 15 newly diagnosed breast cancers are detected each month at the Breast Center of the UKC Tuzla.
“It is extremely important for us to have a sufficient number of well- trained professionals in this field who can dedicate the necessary time and attention to each patient. A basic school of breast ultrasound is essential, and I am confident it will be successful. The Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and our Breast Center, will always remain a place where you can seek answers to all your questions and concerns,” emphasized Dr. Fejzić in her address to the participants.
On behalf of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, the participants were also welcomed by Prof. Dr. Svjetlana Mujagić, Head of the Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.
“The School represents an ideal opportunity for primary health care to assume a significant part of the responsibility and become an effective triage center. From there, patients who truly require further diagnostics can be appropriately referred to the secondary level, the Breast Center at the University Clinical Center Tuzla, where suspicious cases can be properly evaluated,” emphasized Prof. Mujagić.
Speaking on behalf of the Medical Chamber of the Tuzla Canton, Prof. Dr. Lejla Mešalić addressed the participants, highlighting the strong interest shown not only by professionals from the Tuzla Canton but from across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women, which makes it crucial for us to have as many trained professionals in breast ultrasound as possible across all healthcare institutions, both at UKC Tuzla and in primary and secondary healthcare facilities throughout the Tuzla Canton,” stated Prof. Mešalić.
In addition to theoretical lectures, participants will also complete six days of practical training. The practical training supervisors are: Prim. Dr. Mensura Burina, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hanifa Fejzić, and Dr. Alma Gulamović.
The theoretical part of the program will be delivered by: Prim. Dr. Dijana Koprić, Prof. Dr. Nihad Mešanović, Prof. Dr. Lejla Mešalić, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jasminka Mustedanagić Mujanović, and Prof. Dr. Adi Rifatbegović.
