The multidisciplinary kidney transplant team of the Public Health Institution University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC Tuzla) successfully performed a cadaveric kidney transplant.
Thanks to the humane and generous act of a donor family from Sarajevo, a kidney was transplanted into a patient from Srebrenik.
“After being informed that colleagues from Sarajevo had performed kidney explantation and that one kidney was allocated to Tuzla, the transplantation process was immediately organized. Two teams were formed, one responsible for preparing the kidney for transplantation and the other for preparing the patient and performing the transplant procedure. The surgery and postoperative course proceeded smoothly. The organ recipient is a 61-year-old man who had previously been on peritoneal dialysis,” said the Head of the Clinic for Urology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samed Jagodić.
In addition to Dr. Jagodić, the transplantation team included urologists Dr. Rasim Agić, Dr. Amel Mujić, Dr. Haris Đug, and Dr. Velid Šehić. The procedure was also supported by vascular surgeons Dr. Nail Šehić and Dr. Ajdin Umihanić, while anesthesia was administered by Dr. Jasmina Ahmetović Đug.
The anesthetic technician was graduated technician Edin Glavić, and the surgical instrument technicians were graduated technicians Asmir Kamenjaković, Edvir Feukić, and Moamer Hajdarbegović.
According to the transplant program coordinator at UKC Tuzla, Dr. Lejla Vikalo, the patient’s early postoperative course is progressing smoothly. The patient is currently accommodated in the Intensive Care Unit, and his vital parameters remain stable.
In addition to the multidisciplinary teams responsible for organ explantation and transplantation from the Clinic of Urology, the Clinic of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, and the Clinic of Cardiovascular Surgery, the transplantation process also involves healthcare professionals from the Department of Nephrology, Hemodialysis and Transplantation within the Clinic of Internal Medicine, as well as expert teams from the Polyclinic for Transfusion Medicine, the Department of Pathology, the Polyclinic for Laboratory Diagnostics, the Hospital Pharmacy, and the Department of Psychological and Social Support.
The Director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, expressed his gratitude to the multidisciplinary team of UKC Tuzla and to the healthcare professionals of the University Clinical Center Sarajevo for their prompt response and successful cooperation in carrying out the transplantation procedure. He also extended sincere thanks to the donor’s family for their humanity and generosity, as well as to the members of the Tuzla Police Department who, through their official escort, ensured the rapid and safe transport of the organ, an element of exceptional importance in procedures of this kind.
