The Minister of Health of Tuzla Canton, Dr. Dušanka Bećirović, and the Minister of Education and Science of Tuzla Canton, Dr. Sc. Ahmed Omerović, paid a working visit to the University Clinical Center Tuzla on the occasion of the presentation of scientific and professional projects.
During the visit, the Director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, presented the projects implemented so far as part of the institutional commemoration of the genocide against Bosniaks in the UN-protected area of Srebrenica, organized by the University Clinical Center Tuzla. He also presented the plan of activities for 2026 under the theme “Organization of the Work of the University Clinical Center Tuzla in the Period 1992- 1995.”
According to Prof. Dr. Umihanić, institutional and continuous remembrance of the suffering is of great importance, because whenever such events are not commemorated in an organized and systematic manner, there is a risk that similar tragedies may be repeated.
“Doctors and nurses who survived the tragedy of Srebrenica performed the most demanding surgical procedures without anesthesia. Despite the extremely difficult conditions, they made the decision that they would not leave the war hospital until the last wounded person had been cared for, even at the risk of their own lives. These extraordinary efforts of the medical staff in Srebrenica demonstrate that the limits of what seems impossible can be overcome. All these events oblige us to remember and to continuously point to these tragic experiences. As organizers, our goal is to shed light on the truth about the genocide against Bosniaks in Srebrenica from the perspective of the medical profession,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Umihanić.
Director Umihanić emphasized that in 2026 the topic “Organization of the Work of the University Clinical Center Tuzla in the Period 1992- 1995” is planned to be addressed, with the aim of providing younger colleagues, medical doctors, with a clearer understanding of the challenges and experiences faced by the staff of the University Clinical Center Tuzla during the period of aggression.
The meeting was also attended by the heads of organizational units of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, who presented their planned activities and professional symposia for 2026: Prof. Dr. Zikrija Dostović, Head of the Clinic for Neurology; Prof. Dr. Šefika Umihanić, Head of the Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy; Prof. Dr. Jasmina Smajić, Head of the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Reanimatology; Prof. Dr. Fuad Brkić, Head of the Department of Audiology at the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery; and Dr. Dženan Halilović MSc., Head of the Pulmonary Allergology Department of the Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases.
