Purple Day, observed annually on March 26, is dedicated to raising awareness and providing support to people living with epilepsy.
This year, the Clinic for Neurology at the University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC Tuzla) is joining global efforts to increase awareness about epilepsy through a series of activities held under the slogan: “By spreading knowledge about epilepsy, we break prejudices.”
According to Prof. Dr. Zikrija Dostović, Head of the Clinic for Neurology at UKC Tuzla, epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures. Its causes are diverse and may include brain injuries, tumors, inflammatory processes, as well as unknown factors.
“Research and clinical experience show that up to 70% of people diagnosed with epilepsy can achieve good seizure control with timely diagnosis and appropriate therapy. This enables them to lead a high-quality and fulfilling life, comparable to individuals without epilepsy. It is particularly important to address and reduce the stigma associated with this condition,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Dostović.
He further noted that a large number of patients are treated each month at the specialized epilepsy clinic, where a multidisciplinary approach is applied to ensure accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment.
“It is important to stress that not every seizure or loss of consciousness indicates epilepsy. A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is necessary to establish the diagnosis. With modern medications and regular follow- ups, patients can attend school, maintain employment, start families, and actively participate in society,” added Prof. Dr. Dostović.
The Clinic for Neurology at the University Clinical Center Tuzla has held the status of an official Purple Day ambassador in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the past 14 years, continuously implementing activities aimed at supporting people living with epilepsy. This year’s initiatives focus on reducing the stigma and prejudice associated with the disease through education and public awareness.
As highlighted by Dr. Leila Avdić, a specialist in neurology, this year’s Purple Day activities brought together physicians from the Clinic for Neurology and the Clinic for Children’s Diseases at UKC Tuzla, as well as students from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tuzla, along with volunteers and members of the Association of People with Epilepsy.
On this occasion, informational materials on epilepsy, its symptoms, causes, and management, were distributed to citizens at the Tuzlanka Department Store. In addition, doctors and medical students engaged directly with the public, providing guidance on recognizing epilepsy and administering first aid in the event of a seizure, while also conveying messages of solidarity and support for individuals affected by the condition.
As part of the Purple Day observance, participation in the Vivicittà street race, scheduled for April 5, 2026, in Tuzla, has also been announced. The event is organized by the Sloboda Tehnograd Athletic Club.
According to Prof. Dr. Kada Delić, Executive Director of the Special Olympics of Bosnia and Herzegovina, sport plays a key role in overcoming prejudice, as reflected in the slogan “Faster than all prejudices.”
“Within the Special Olympics movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we have a significant number of athletes living with epilepsy who achieve outstanding results. Their accomplishments clearly demonstrate that their condition does not define their abilities. On this occasion, we are pleased to announce the Vivicittà street race in Tuzla on April 5, 2026. The race will bring together citizens, healthcare professionals, students, and people living with epilepsy in a shared message of inclusion and support,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Delić.
