The University Clinical Center Tuzla (the UKC Tuzla) organized two major professional and scientific events today, bringing together around 500 healthcare experts and participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad.
The first Symposium on ERAS Protocols and Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery was organized by the Clinic of Surgery of the UKC Tuzla and gathered more than 200 registered participants. The international symposium focused on the importance of integrating Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols with minimally invasive surgical techniques as a modern standard in the treatment of colorectal diseases.
The combination of these approaches enables faster patient recovery, reduces postoperative complications and improves overall treatment outcomes.
According to the president of the organizing committee, Prof. Dr. Zlatan Mehmedović, Head of the Clinic of Surgery, ERAS is much more than a surgical technique as it represents the coordinated work of an entire multidisciplinary team that includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, gastroenterologists, physiotherapists, nurses and nutritionists.
“Today’s symposium is dedicated to the development and implementation of modern healthcare practices encompassing the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases of treatment through the ERAS concept, or enhanced recovery after surgery. Alongside the ERAS concept, the development of minimally invasive surgery has become the gold standard in modern surgical treatment. When these two approaches are combined, they significantly reduce complications in operated patients and enable faster recovery and return to daily activities,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Mehmedović.
“Our goal as organizers was to contribute to improving teamwork and standardizing perioperative care,” he said.
Another important event that gathered a large number of medical experts in Tuzla was the 12th Symposium on Pulmonary Diseases with international participation. The symposium brought together pulmonologists, oncologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, pediatricians, as well as specialists in family and occupational medicine. Through expert lectures and constructive discussions, participants exchanged the latest scientific knowledge, professional experiences and achievements in the field of pulmonary diseases.
During the ceremonial opening of the symposium, participants were addressed by the president of the organizing committee, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dženan Halilović, who emphasized that the symposium program included several highly relevant topics presented by distinguished experts from Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“In recent years, diseases of the respiratory system have become a major focus not only for healthcare professionals, but also for the wider public. The goal of today’s symposium was to offer a diverse program of current topics and distinguished speakers whose expertise will contribute to improving our daily professional work and strengthening the overall impact of the medical profession,” emphasized Assoc. Prof. Halilović.
The organization of these two significant medical conferences in Tuzla once again confirmed the importance of continuous professional education, international cooperation and the exchange of experiences among healthcare professionals. Through the promotion of modern treatment approaches, multidisciplinary collaboration and the implementation of new medical standards, such events contribute to the advancement of healthcare services and the improvement of patient care in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.
