The first forms of healthcare for women in Bosnia and Herzegovina began in Tuzla in 1893 with the arrival of the first female physician and gynecologist, Dr. Teodora Krajewska. The government in Vienna, within the Austro-Hungarian administration at that time, had announced a competition published in Switzerland, to which Dr. Krajewska applied. She had been an assistant at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic in Geneva, and was later joined by Dr. Jadwiga Olszewska. For this reason, the Clinic Day is marked every year on May 30.
Today, as part of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics holds a special place thanks to the continuous education of medical staff, achieving constant success and impressive results that can be compared with any clinic in the region and beyond.
Since 2004, the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics Tuzla has held the title, and since 2017 has been an accredited institution with 100% compliance with the “Baby-Friendly Standard,” bearing the name “Baby-Friendly Hospital.” The Clinic has also initiated the accreditation process according to the standards of the Agency for Accreditation and Healthcare Quality. In the upcoming period, the Clinic plans to become a “Mother-Friendly Hospital.”
The Clinic consists of 10 departments (the Day Surgery Department with the Gynecology-Obstetrics Polyclinic and Admission Unit, the High-Risk Pregnancy Department, the Postpartum Department, the Delivery Department, the Neonatal Department, the Human Reproduction Department, the Conservative Gynecology Department, the Operative Gynecology Department, the Gynecologic Oncology Department, and the Operating Block) with a total of 179 beds; nine outpatient clinics (General Gynecology Clinic, Oncology Clinic, Admission Clinic, Cervical Pathology Clinic, Cytology Clinic, Human Reproduction Clinic, Microinvasive Surgery Clinic, High-Risk Pregnancy Clinic, Neonatology Clinic); and two specialized units (Ultrasound Unit and PAP Test and Colposcopy Unit).
The Clinic employs a total of 123 staff members: 21 specialist physicians in gynecology and obstetrics and 4 pediatricians-neonatologists (including 6 full professors of medical sciences, 8 subspecialists, 2 assistant professors of medical sciences, 7 primarius physicians, and 5 Masters of Medical Sciences), 3 physicians in residency training, 7 medical doctors, 13 graduate nurses, 1 graduate healthcare manager, 69 secondary-level midwife nurses, 2 biologists, 1 technical secretary, and 1 economist.
