HEALTH CARE SERVICES

The Pulmonary Diseases Clinic diagnoses and treats lung diseases, non-specific and specific (TB) as well as diagnoses malignant diseases of the respiratory tract, performs bronchoscopies, polysomnography, as well as complete pulmonological and allergological treatment of patients, X-ray and CT diagnostics. It diagnoses and monitors occupational lung diseases, inflammatory, obstructive and other lung diseases. It conducts pulmonary rehabilitation, active patient education, education on the proper use of metered dose aerosols, treats post-primary tuberculosis in patients over 14 years of age, as well as infections caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria. It treats patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema), pneumonia, pulmonary thromboembolism, chronic pulmonary heart, sarcoidosis. The Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases has a capacity of 80 patient beds.

DEPARTMENT FOR PULMONOLOGY/ ALLERGOLOGY

The Department of Pulmonary Allergy, with a capacity of 15 beds, diagnoses and monitors occupational lung diseases, inflammatory, obstructive and other lung diseases. Pulmonary rehabilitation, active patient education, education on the proper use of metered dose aerosols are carried out, and it is a regular and everyday activity in the work of nurses. Patient education is also carried out through the “Asthma School”, which is organized for patients. The work in the department is closely linked to the work of the allergology, polysomnography and functional testing cabinet, where bodyplethysmographic testing of lung function is performed with determination of the flow-volume curve, spirometric examination of lung function, determination of diffusion capacity, determination of acid-base status, electrolytes and values of the respiratory system, as well as bronchodilator and bronchoprovocation testing.

DEPARTMENT FOR NON SPECIFIC PULMONARY DISEASES

The Department of Non-Specific Pulmonary Diseases, with a capacity of 16 beds, diagnoses and treats patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema), pulmonary thromboembolic pneumonia, chronic pulmonary heart disease and other diseases other than tuberculosis. Pulmonary rehabilitation, active patient education, education on the proper use of metered dose aerosols, so-called pumps, is a regular and everyday activity in the work of nurses, patient education is also carried out through the “Asthma School”, which is organized for patients. The work of the department is closely linked to the work of the Office of Allergology, Polysomnography and Functional Testing, where bodyplethysmographic testing of pulmonary function is performed with determination of the flow-volume curve, spirometric examination of pulmonary function, determination of diffusion capacity, determination of acid-base status, electrolytes and values of the blood glucose, and bronchodilator and bronchoprovocation testing.

DEPARTMENT FOR MALIGNANT DISEASES

The Department for Malignant Diseases, with a capacity of 21 beds, diagnoses and treats patients with suspected lung malignancy.

DEPARTMENT FOR TUBERCULOSIS

The department for tuberculosis, with a capacity of 16 beds, consists of a male and female ward. The departmnt treats post-primary tuberculosis in patients older than 14 years, as well as infections caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria.

DEPARTMENT FOR SEMI- INTENSIVE CARE

The department for semi- intensive care has a capacity of 12 bed.

OUTPATIENT CLINIC:

ADMISSION

Emergency cases and scheduled admissions, medical evaluation and observation of patients are carried out in admission of outpatient clinic. When patients are candidates for admission to the Department as inpatients following information are recorded in the patient’s medical records: medical history, clinical path, nursing anamnesis and documentation. The patient is registered as an inpatient and referred to the Department for further treatment.

SPECIALIST CONSULTATIONS

Specialist and clinical consultations undertake all doctors in the outpatient clinic following outpatient service and attending doctor schedule from 11 a.m. – 2: 30 p.m.

For specialist consultations the patient must have valid health insurance, a referral for a specialist, a discharge letter from hospital, and previously recommended laboratory analysis.

CABINETS

Cabinet for bronchoscopy

The most modern cabinet for respiratory endoscopy provides diagnostic and therapeutic interventional pulmonology techniques such as flexible and rigid bronchoscopy. Catheter biopsy, transbronchial biopsy, transbronchial puncture and bronchobiopsy (brush biopsy, forceps biopsy, needle biopsy) are techniques used for taking pathological- histological material. The Cabinet is equipped with a video-bronchoscopy system with a narrow spectrum of images (Narrow Band Imaging – NBI bronchoscopy) that allows early stage bronchial cancer diagnosis.

Cabinet for respiratory function testing

Cabinet is equipped with a modern technology such as blood gas analyzer and a MasterScreen Body system for comprehensive pulmonary function testing, monitoring of therapy effects, as well as scientific research purposes.

We perform following pulmonary function testing:

spirometry
spirometry with bronchodilatator, body plethysmography
body plethysmography with bronchodilatator
gas analysis at rest
gas analysis during load

Based on the results of pulmonary function, doctors recommend therapy, assess the risk of performing extrapulmonary surgery in patients with associated lung disease, as well as the patient’s ability to work for the disability commission.

The Clinic has 76 employees: 19 doctors ( 2 with PhD specialist in internal medicine, 1 subspecialist of pulmonology, 6 specialist in pneumophthisiology, 5 specialist in pulmonology, 5 doctors on residency), 54 nurses/technicians (1 with master theses in health care and management, 8 graduated nurses/technicians and 45 nurses/ technicians), 1 healthcare assistant, 1 supply officer.

The Clinic for Pulmonary Diseases is a teaching clinic that is linked to the Medical faculty and High Health School of the University of Tuzla. There are 15 academic doctors working in medical education and teaching.
