ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTER FOR RARE DISEASES
The Center for Rare Diseases provides the following services:
- Maintaining a registry of patients with rare diseases for Tuzla Canton and the entire territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH).
- Conducting subspecialist examinations by medical geneticists and recommending or organizing examinations with other specialists or subspecialists involved in the treatment of patients with rare diseases.
- Referring or recommending patients of all ages for the diagnosis of rare diseases.
- Organizing genetic counseling/information sessions for patients, families, and presymptomatic individuals/relatives regarding diagnosed rare diseases.
- Proposing the care of patients with rare diseases in the clinics of the University Clinical Center and other healthcare centers and institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina or abroad.
- Organizing consultative services to improve the care of patients with rare diseases in the clinics of the University Clinical Center Tuzla.
- Proposing methods and indications for the introduction and establishment of prenatal screening programs for rare diseases.
- Proposing and working on the establishment of genetic and metabolic laboratory-diagnostic programs for rare diseases in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Collaborating with all other healthcare institutions in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as throughout the country.
- Cooperating with the Federal Ministry of Health on a unified registry and promoting programs for the treatment and care of specific groups of patients with rare diseases.
- Collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Health Insurance and Reinsurance Institute to include specific medications for rare diseases on the list of medicines financed by health insurance funds in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Health Insurance and Reinsurance Institute to include certain rare diseases on the list of conditions whose treatment abroad can be financed by health insurance funds in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Providing information on new therapies available worldwide for the treatment of specific rare diseases.
- Collaborating with cantonal, federal, and state public health institutes, as well as the statistics institute, to improve the recording and coding of rare diseases in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Establishing collaboration with international reference centers for the treatment of rare diseases.
- Organizing and conducting continuous education for healthcare professionals and other specialists in the field of rare diseases.
