The University Clinical Center Tuzla and the Association of Endoscopic Surgeons of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AESBH) hosted the TAPP and TEP surgical procedures Workshop.

Transabdominal pre-peritoneal (TAPP) and totally extra- peritoneal (TEP) are a minimally invasive laparoscopy techniques used to perform surgical procedures within the abdominal cavity.

The head of the Clinic for Surgery, University Clinical Center Tuzla Ass. Prof. Zlatan Mehmedović on the occasion said that the objective of the Workshop is to expand the educational landscape of abdominal wall surgery and increase the percentage of minimally invasive surgeries of the anterior abdominal wall hernia.

The leader of Workshop was Dr. Bojan Radovanović, specialist in general surgery with many years of experience in abdominal surgery and abdominal wall hernia surgery, and president of the Serbian Hernia Society. A significant challenge of these surgical techniques, according to Dr. Radovanović, is a rather long training process and the large number of surgeries needed to assess surgical skill competence. According to him, surgery is quite beneficial, especially for the younger population, because the recovery period and return to daily activities is shorter and faster.

The AESBH is committed to continuous cooperation with Bosnian and Herzegovinian health care institutions in order to raise and reach the higher educational levels. “In the last thirty years, surgery has undergone major changes from open to laparoscopic, i.e. endoscopic surgery, and the current trend is the transition to robotic surgery. We wish to introduce it in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, said the president of the Association of Endoscopic Surgeons in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Dr. Samir Delibegović.

During the Workshop, six operations were performed using the mentioned approach in the presence of about 50 young doctors from hospitals throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. The next Workshop is planned on the topic of minimally invasive surgery of the upper abdomen and stomach, and the educators will be experts from Italy.
