LLETZ APPROACH IN THE TREATMENT OF CERVICAL ABNORMALITIES

The UKC Tuzla Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics offers a new approach to treat pre- invasive and early invasive cervical dysplasia called large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ). For LLETZ, after applying a special liquid to the cervix to stain the abnormal tissue, a fine diathermic loop is used to shave away the abnormal tissue from the cervix- a cone biopsy. The procedure allows for the blood vessels surrounding the area to be sealed.

Tissue removed from the cervix is sent to a pathology laboratory. This approach is suitable for women of adolescent and reproductive age because it allows for all of the abnormal tissue to be removed without leaving significant trauma to female reproductive system.

According to Prof. Dr. Dženita Ljuca, head of the UKC Tuzla Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics, so far only the classic cold- knife conization has been performed to remove tissue from the cervix. This classic approach has several disadvantages as it lasts longer and it is associated with bleeding. Also the patient’s recovery last a few days, while many patients feel well enough to leave hospital about two hours after LLETZ.

Surgical team that performed LLETZ approach in the treatment of cervical abnormalities are Prof. Dr. Dženita Ljuca, Dr. Adnan Babović, Dr. Adnan Šerak, Dr. Senida Keser, anesthesioloists, Hajrija Karišik, Edina Bičakčić and Dženana Mijabašić, scrub nurses.
