Movember, combining the words “November” and “moustache”, is a month dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health, with a special focus on prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
This global movement encourages men to grow moustaches throughout November as a symbol of awareness, inspiring conversations about prevention, early detection, and the importance of regular medical check-ups.
The Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy joined the global campaign by organizing an expert lecture on the topic “Movember- Men’s Health Month.”
Medical technician Enes Smajlović presented key information on prevention and highlighted the main risk factors for developing prostate and testicular cancer. He emphasized that, according to the Institute of Public Health of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, prostate cancer is the second most common malignant tumor among men in the Federation of BiH.
“In the Movember 2024 campaign across five cities of the Federation, 698 men were tested, and 102 of them (14.6%) had elevated PSA levels. In Western Europe, the incidence of prostate cancer is about 97 cases per 100,000 men. According to the UNFPA/WHO project from December 2024, prostate cancer in BiH accounts for 6% of all new cancer cases, with an estimated incidence of 24.9 per 100,000 inhabitants and a mortality rate of 11.6 per 100,000,” said Smajlović.
He also stressed the importance of regular self-examination and provided an overview of diagnostic and therapeutic options used in the treatment of testicular cancer.
Following the educational lecture, participants had the opportunity to continue the discussion and exchange experiences, accompanied by a symbolically decorated cake in the spirit of Movember.
