The First Symposium on Neonatology “The Day for a Newborn” was officially opened in a solemn ceremony on Thursday, 21st April 2016, in the presence of numerous participants, guests and media. The Symposium is organized by the UKC Tuzla Clinic for Children’s Diseases in cooperation with the Tuzla Canton Medical Chamber, the Tuzla Canton Medical Technician/Nurses Chamber, under the auspices of the Government of Tuzla Canton.

As it was pointed out during the opening ceremony, this Symposium will present challenges and management dilemmas seen daily by neonatologists, pediatricians, obstetricians, pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists, family doctors, midwives and pediatric nurses.

“Neonatology represents one of the triumphs of modern medicine, as well as the transplantation medicine, because it turns fantasy into reality. Neonatal and perinatal health care occupy only 0.5% of total health care in a human life, but it is responsible for the overall health status in later life period. No other branch of medicine has such broad goals, the endless possibilities in activities, but also a great responsibility as Neonatology.” said Prof. Dr. Fahrija Skokić, president of the organizing committee and the UKC Tuzla Medical Director.

The UKC Tuzla director Ass. Prof. Nešad Hotić addressed the attendees and pointed out that the death rate in pregnancy and newborns is one of the most important indicator of health care quality, therefore reduction of avoidable maternal and child deaths has been a global priority of health care systems.” Education of perinatologists and neonatologists is an essential part of efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality, and this Symposium will promote the team work in research and contribute to solving the dilemma in medical practice.”

The Symposium was officially opened by the Tuzla Canton Health Minister Dr. Bahrudin Hadžiefendić. Attendees at the First Symposium on Neonatology were given the opportunity to watch short film on the development of Neonatology in the UKC Tuzla.
