The surgical team at the University Clinical Center Tuzla has successfully performed its first independent elective laparoscopic splenectomy in a patient with splenomegaly and a splenic tumor, once again confirming the institution’s continuous progress in the field of minimally invasive surgery.
This procedure represents a significant advancement, considering both the complexity of the operation and the technical demands of the laparoscopic approach. The use of modern surgical techniques enables faster patient recovery, reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and an earlier return to daily activities.
The surgical team was led by Prof. Dr. Zlatan Mehmedović, together with his surgical associates and the anesthesia team.
According to Prof. Dr. Mehmedović, Head of the Clinic for Surgery at the University Clinical Center Tuzla, the procedure was completed successfully. The patient’s vital parameters are stable, and following control laboratory findings, discharge to home care is planned.
Professor Mehmedović emphasized that the continuous improvement of surgical procedures and ongoing staff education remain key priorities.
“The introduction and expansion of minimally invasive procedures represent a strategic direction in the development of our Clinic. Laparoscopic splenectomy is further proof that our team successfully follows modern global standards and applies them in everyday clinical practice, to the benefit of our patients,” said the Head of the Clinic for Surgery.
He also highlighted that, in recent years, the Clinic for Surgery of the University Clinical Center Tuzla has fully standardized laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair using the TAPP and TEP techniques, further enhancing the quality and safety of surgical treatment in this field.
According to the Clinic’s statistics, a record number of laparoscopic procedures in colorectal surgery were performed last year, underscoring the institution’s strong commitment to the development of minimally invasive approaches and continuous professional training.
“Our goal is clear- to provide patients with the highest level of healthcare through modern, less invasive treatment methods. Our vision is to introduce robotic surgery at the Clinic for Surgery as the next step toward greater precision, improved control of the operative field, and better functional outcomes,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Mehmedović.
On this occasion, he also expressed his gratitude to the management of the institution: “I would especially like to thank the management of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, led by Director Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, for their continuous support in the development of surgery and their investment in modern medical equipment, which represents a key prerequisite for further progress and the introduction of new technologies into our daily practice.”
With these achievements, the Clinic for Surgery of the University Clinical Center Tuzla has once again confirmed its position as one of the leading centers in the region in the field of modern surgery.
