Institutional Commemoration of the Genocide Committed against Bosniaks during the Aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Public Health Institution University Clinical Center Tuzla, in cooperation with its partners, is organizing a scientific and professional symposium entitled “Organization of Care for the Injured and Sick at the University Clinical Center Tuzla (1992–1995).” The symposium will be held on July 8, 2026, beginning at 4:30 p.m., at the Mellain Hotel in Tuzla.
The symposium is dedicated to documenting and scientifically evaluating the organization of healthcare under wartime conditions, with particular emphasis on the experiences, expertise, and commitment of the employees of the University Clinical Center Tuzla in providing medical care to the injured and sick during the aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995.
“This scientific and professional symposium is the fourth event organized by the University Clinical Center Tuzla as part of the institutional commemoration of the genocide committed against Bosniaks during the aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through these symposiums, we address a range of topics that bear witness to this tragic period of our history, with particular emphasis on the invaluable contribution of healthcare professionals who, under exceptionally difficult wartime circumstances, saved countless lives, ensured the continuity of healthcare services, and exemplified the highest standards of humanity, professionalism, and medical ethics. From the very beginning, the primary objective of this institutional commemoration has been to preserve historical truth through a scientific and professional approach, document authentic experiences, transfer knowledge to future generations, and foster dialogue with colleagues and experts from other countries. I believe that we have largely achieved these objectives and established this symposium as an internationally recognized forum for scientific dialogue, professional exchange, and the dissemination of knowledge. It is our responsibility to scientifically document these experiences, safeguard them from oblivion, and pass them on to future generations as a permanent testimony to the indispensable role of healthcare professionals in protecting human life, preserving human dignity, and upholding the principles of medicine during one of the most challenging periods in our country’s history,” emphasized the Director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić.
The symposium program will feature expert lectures and presentations delivered by distinguished professionals and direct participants in the wartime events, highlighting the experiences of organizing healthcare services, providing surgical care, and ensuring medical treatment under the conditions of aggression. The symposium is expected to generate conclusions that will make a significant contribution to scientific research, the preservation of historical records, and the advancement of international professional cooperation in the field of war medicine. At the same time, it will further strengthen efforts to document and scientifically evaluate the experiences of healthcare professionals who served under extraordinary circumstances.
Healthcare professionals, members of the academic community, students, representatives of public institutions, the media, and all interested citizens are cordially invited to attend the scientific and professional symposium. By participating, attendees will contribute to preserving the culture of remembrance and promoting the universal values of humanity, professionalism, responsibility, and respect for historical truth.
