Multiple Sclerosis- the disease with a thousand faces

The Clinic of Neurology, University Clinical Center Tuzla in cooperation with the Tuzla Canton Multiple Sclerosis Society held a press conference on the occasion of World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day.

The participants of today’s press conference were Prof. Dr. Osman Sinanović, Prof. Dr. Mirjana Vidović, graduate nurse Alma Vuleta, Head nurse of the Clinic, and Vahida Hajdarbegović, a representative of the Tuzla Canton Multiple Sclerosis Society.

As it was said during the press conference, World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day is celebrated on the last Wednesday of May in more than 67 countries around the world, with aim to raise global awareness of multiple sclerosis, its symptoms and treatment.

According to Prof. Dr.Osman Sinanović, the prevalence of the disease per 100.000 people in the Tuzla Canton is around 40, indicating a high risk area for multiple sclerosis. “Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory, progressive, autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, which may manifest a variety of neurological symptoms. The disease usually begins between ages of 20 and 40.”explained Prof. Dr. Mirjana Vidović, and added that the disease may manifest in a number of non-motor symptoms as well.
While addressing the press conference, the participants talked about available therapies and treatments for multiple sclerosis in our canton and country.
Mrs. Vahida Hajdarbegović, a secretary of the Tuzla Canton Multiple Sclerosis Society also addressed media representatives and talked about coping strategies adopted by patients suffering from multiple sclerosis.
