The Department of Gastoenterology and Hepatology, Clinic of Internal Medicine will introduce a new technique for the evaluation of fibrosis in chronic liver disease during the first days of the new year. The technique, transient elastography FibroScan allows for faster and more comfortable diagnostic experience.
Specifically, it is a nonivasive method using ultrasound to investigate disease in the liver in all patients with diffuse liver disease, such as all types of hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. In addition, transient elastography is a non invasive means of estimating the amount of liver fat in all patients with fatty liver disease.

Up to now, in order to confirm the extent of liver disease patients were required to have a liver biopsy, a procedure which has significant morbidity and mortality rate. On the other hand, the introduction of transient elastography will simplify and improve the efficiency of the patient journey.
The fact that this procedure is being performed for ten minutes in an outpatient setting while saving a bed occupancy makes a significant improvement.
For this great improvement the University Clinical Center is grateful for generous and valuable donation of FibroScan device made by pharmaceutical company Abbvie, which once again proved to reflect the values of social responsibility. As a reminder, this company one year ago also donated free treatment for 15 most difficult patients with chronic C hepatitis in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the amount of almost 1.5 million BAM.
