The solemn opening of the First B&H Summer Symposium on Oncology with international participation (22 and 23 June, 2018) organized by the Clinic of Oncology and Radiotherapy University Clinical Center Tuzla and the Tuzla Canon Medical Chamber took place today at the Hotel Tuzla. The Symposium will include six sessions that will cover a wide variety of topics regarding cancer diseases and palliative care. This symposium will also host sessions in oncology nursing and medical radiology engineering.

While delivering a welcome speech, the president of the organizing committee of the Symposium, Ass. Prof. Jasmina Alidžanović, specialist in internal medicine and oncologist, said that the number of people suffering from malignant diseases has increased significantly over the past 20 years. As she said, there is no the national cancer registry in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the Oncology Council of the University Clinical Center Tuzla in the year 2000 established statistics and cancer register for the Tuzla Canton. Our statistic shows that the number of newly discovered cases of colorectal cancer in the year 2000 was 78, and in the year 2017 the number of newly discovered cases of the same disease increased to 200. “The alarming statistics points to the necessity of an individual approach to the treatment of oncological patient. Therefore, multidisciplinary approach is essential both in diagnosis and in surgical, hemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment.” she said.

Prof. Dr. Fahrija Skokić, medical director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla also attended opening ceremony and said that the strategic goal of our hospital is to link scientific research with practical clinical work and that clinical research scientists in cooperation with medical professionals may contribute to the development of new ideas to improve diagnostic procedures and treatment of oncological patients.

An expert advisor of the Tuzla Canton Ministry of Health Dr. Amir Azabagić declared the Symposium officially open. The participants and attendees of the Symposium will have an excellent opportunity to hear updates in oncology and radiotherapy from invited lecturers and experts from Serbia and Croatia.
