World Stroke Day, 2018

World Stroke Day is celebrated around the globe on October 29.On that occasion the Clinic for Neurology, University Clinical Center Tuzla today hosted a press conference.
The main goal of World Stroke Day project is health education of population with regard to recognize stroke risk factors and the importance of acting fast to get medical help.

At a press conference Prof. Dr. Dževet Smajlović, head of the Clinic for Neurology said that stroke accounted for more than 5 million deaths world wide. He also said that stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability in adults. Prof. Smajlović pointed out that stroke is one of the most prevalent neurological condition among inpatients at the Clinic for Neurology, and that out of the total number of inpatients, 50% are the patients with stroke symptoms.

Prof. Dr. Mirjana Vidović, chief of the Department for cerebrovascular diseases spoke with members of the press about different stroke symptoms and said that stroke can be manifested by headache, dizziness, vomiting, altered consciousness, epileptic seizures, trouble with speaking and loss of balance or coordination. Symptoms, according to her, depend upon which area of the brain is damaged and on the patient’s general condition.

During a press conference Ass. Prof. Biljana Kojić from the Department of cerebrovascular diseases spoke about risk factors and warning signs of stroke.

Ass. Prof. Zikrija Dostović also made a short statement at the press conference about thrombolitic therapy for acute ischemic stroke in Clinical Center Tuzla. He said that significant step forward has been made in the treatment of stroke with the use of thrombolytic therapy, but also pointed out that there are ongoing preparations for the introduction of mechanical thrombectomy as groundbreaking stroke treatment.

Head nurse of the Clinic of Neurology Alma Vuleta talked about nursing role in caring for stroke patients. On behalf of students’ association “MEDICUS” the press addressed Adnan Mujanović and talked about stroke campaign 2018 activities.
