TARGETED THERAPY AND IMMUNOTHERAPY IN CANCER TREATMENT

The Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy offers targeted therapy in the treatment of malignant diseases. Targeted therapy is a type of precision cancer treatment that works in different ways from standard chemotherapy. Monoclonal antibody therapy in the neoadjuvant treatment of breast cancer reduced the rate of breast cancer mortality by 30% and the rate of breast cancer recurrence by 50%.

HER2-positive breast cancer represents an aggressive subtype of the disease and the use of this therapy has revolutionized the treatment and survival of patients. It is the first drug to change the outcome of patients with HER2- positive breast cancer. Based on our experience the long term use of this drug, alone or in combination, improves the prognosis of patients. Diagnosing cancer at its earliest stages often provides the best chance for cure. In metastatic diseases, in combination with chemotherapy prolongs the time of diseases progression and overall survival. During the last four years immunotherapy has been used in the treatment of malignant diseases, which, especially in the treatment of metastatic melanoma has given very good results regarding a response to therapy and prolonging survival in patients with metastatic melanoma.

In the last ten years, in addition to standard cytostatic therapy, new biological drugs have been in use at the Clinic, and that has greatly extended the overall survival of patients.

The Clinic for Oncology, Hematology and Radiology has recorded excellent results with the use of new drugs, which, owing to their specific, targeted mechanism of action, have proven to be effective therapy in cancer treatment.
