Every year, the Institute for Microbiology tests 88,822 patients, that is, 109,923 different samples, or 285, 544 different analyses. At the institute health professionals have examined the various materials for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses, as well as the diagnosis of autoimmune and allergic diseases and the assessment of the immune status of patients. Our expertise is the monitoring of bacterial resistance and antimicrobial agents, and the monitoring of hospital infections. For diagnostic purposes, we have used various methods from the fields of bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, immunology, molecular medicine, hospital hygiene and sanitary microbiology such as:

Direct microscopic examination of patient material

Cultivation of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, cultivation of mycobacteria and fungi on nutrient media for identifying pathogenic microorganisms

Examination of the sensitivity of isolated bacteria and fungi to antimicrobial agents

Immunological diagnostics for the detection of antibodies and antigens

Molecular diagnostics

Microbial identification is done by:

The innovative VITEK 2 Compact microbial identification system

Fast microbial identification which enables timely diagnosis

Sensitivity to antimicrobial agents enables clinicians to choose the most adequate antibiotic treatment

Determining the antibiogram on the VITEC2 Compact:

Reading of the results is done automatically by the Expert system for the validation of the sensitivity test

A possibility of identifying potential mechanisms of resistance, even emerging of low- level resistance.
