On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the partnership between the University Clinical Center Tuzla and Buffalo General Hospital, the Director of UKC Tuzla, Prof. Dr. \u0160ekib Umihani\u0107, welcomed Prof. Dr. Jacob Bergsland, renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and Professor of Surgery at the University at Buffalo, whose vision and dedication were instrumental in establishing and developing this historically significant collaboration.<\/p>\n
Prof. Dr. Bergsland was among the key initiators of cooperation between the healthcare institutions of Buffalo and Tuzla during one of the most challenging periods in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1994, amidst the devastation of war, he came to Tuzla as a volunteer, providing both professional expertise and humanitarian support to the healthcare system. What began as an act of solidarity evolved into a lasting mission focused on strengthening professional, academic, and humanitarian ties between Buffalo and Tuzla.<\/p>\n
Through his leadership, commitment, and international engagement, the partnership between Buffalo General Hospital and UKC Tuzla was formally established on October 21, 1996, during a ceremony held at the White House under the patronage of Hillary Rodham Clinton.<\/p>\n
During his visit to the Public Health Institution University Clinical Center Tuzla on the occasion of this important anniversary, Professor Bergsland reflected on the beginnings of the cooperation, recalling his meetings with healthcare professionals from UKC Tuzla during the war and post-war years, as well as the numerous joint initiatives that contributed to the modernization of healthcare services, the education of medical staff, and the advancement of various medical disciplines within the institution.<\/p>\n
The Director of the Public Health Institution UKC Tuzla, Prof. Dr. \u0160ekib Umihani\u0107, emphasized that Professor Bergsland\u2019s visit represents a powerful symbol of the enduring friendship, humanitarian spirit, and professional ties that have connected the healthcare institutions and citizens of Buffalo and Tuzla for three decades. According to Director Umihani\u0107, such visits carry special significance as they further strengthen international cooperation, which remains one of the key drivers of progress in modern medicine and the continued development of UKC Tuzla.<\/p>\n
Director Umihani\u0107 highlighted that, thanks to the partnership established through cooperation with Professor Bergsland, numerous educational, training, and development projects have been successfully implemented over the years. These initiatives have enabled hundreds of physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to acquire new knowledge, skills, and valuable international experience. He noted that this collaboration has made a substantial contribution to strengthening professional capacities, improving healthcare services, and modernizing the overall work of UKC Tuzla.<\/p>\n
The celebration of the 30th anniversary of the partnership serves not only as a reminder of a significant historical milestone but also as an expression of gratitude to all those who, through their expertise, solidarity, commitment, and vision, contributed to the development of UKC Tuzla and the strengthening of friendly relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States of America.<\/p>\n

Even then, I knew that this cooperation should grow into a long-term and lasting partnership. I am especially proud that, after three decades, we can clearly see how much the partnership between Buffalo and Tuzla has contributed to the advancement of medical education, professional exchange, and the improvement of healthcare services. Beyond institutional cooperation, we built genuine friendships founded on solidarity, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to supporting patients and healthcare professionals in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a great honor for me to be in Tuzla once again and to see generations of physicians and nurses who have continued to uphold and develop the values upon which this partnership was established. Today, UKC Tuzla stands as a modern and respected medical center, and being part of that journey remains one of the most meaningful experiences of my professional career,\u201d said Prof. Bergsland.<\/p>\n
The working meeting was also attended by Prof. Dr. Mirsad Hod\u017ei\u0107, Head of the Department of Endovascular Neurosurgery, a long-standing participant and leader of several projects in the field of neurosurgery, as well as an active contributor to the cooperation program between Buffalo General Hospital and UKC Tuzla. Through this partnership, Prof. Hod\u017ei\u0107 has repeatedly visited the United States for professional training and academic development.<\/p>\n
