A professional symposium entitled \u201cModern Challenges in Pulmonary Oncology\u201d was held in Tuzla, bringing together a large number of healthcare professionals, experts, and distinguished guests.<\/p>\n
The symposium was organized by the Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy of the University Clinical Center Tuzla in cooperation with the Association of Lung Cancer Patients \u201cWings of Hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
The scientific program addressed key topics in contemporary pulmonary oncology, including the early detection of lung cancer, advanced diagnostic approaches, systemic treatment modalities, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to patient care, the application of personalized medicine, adherence to modern therapeutic guidelines, and strengthening collaboration among the various medical specialties involved in the treatment of lung cancer.<\/p>\n
The symposium attracted significant interest from the professional community. Participants included specialists and residents in oncology, pulmonology, radiology, thoracic surgery, and pathology, as well as physicians from other medical disciplines who contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of patients with malignant lung diseases.<\/p>\n
The Director of the University Clinical Center Tuzla, Prof. Dr. \u0160ekib Umihani\u0107, emphasized the exceptional importance of organizing professional and scientific meetings at the institution.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the past two months, our professional conferences have brought together more than 3,000 participants from various healthcare disciplines. These events have provided a valuable opportunity for the direct exchange of the latest knowledge, innovations, and experiences shared by leading experts from around the world,\u201d said Prof. Dr. Umihani\u0107.<\/p>\n
He also announced the continuation of efforts to organize international scientific symposia and professional conferences, reaffirming the University Clinical Center Tuzla\u2019s commitment to continuous professional development, scientific advancement, and the promotion of excellence in healthcare.<\/p>\n
Speaking on behalf of the symposium\u2019s organizing committee, Prof. Dr. \u0160efika Umihani\u0107, Head of the Clinic for Oncology and Radiotherapy, highlighted the significant challenges associated with the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, while also emphasizing the remarkable advances achieved in recent years.<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore the introduction of molecular profiling, the prognosis for patients with metastatic lung cancer was poor, with survival often limited to approximately one year. Today, however, we are witnessing long-term survival among many of these patients. Just a few days ago, the results of the CROWN study were presented, showing that 93% of patients who responded to treatment with lorlatinib remain alive. This clearly demonstrates the importance of comprehensive diagnostic evaluation before decisions are made regarding further treatment and patient care,\u201d explained Prof. Dr. Umihani\u0107.<\/p>\n
She particularly stressed the importance of prevention and early detection of lung cancer.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal is to fully implement the screening program that has already been initiated, because early detection remains the most effective and cost-efficient approach to treatment. In the past, lung cancer was most commonly diagnosed in patients between 50 and 70 years of age. Today, however, we are seeing an increasing number of cases among younger individuals. Oncology is a rapidly advancing field, but we are also witnessing concerning trends, with the disease presenting in increasingly atypical forms, affecting younger populations, and often being diagnosed at an advanced stage. For this reason, Tuzla Canton, as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole, cannot afford to be without a comprehensive lung cancer screening system,\u201d concluded Prof. Dr. Umihani\u0107.<\/p>\n
Vice President of the \u201cWings of Hope\u201d Association, Dr. Arzumana O\u017eegovi\u0107-Oru\u010devi\u0107, emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about lung cancer and the need for timely diagnosis.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, more than 200 new cases of lung cancer were diagnosed last year alone, and over 50% of these patients were diagnosed only after the disease had already progressed to the metastatic stage. Through the activities of our association, we strive to educate citizens about the importance of recognizing early symptoms and seeking medical attention without delay. When lung cancer is detected at an early stage, the chances of successful treatment and complete recovery are significantly higher,\u201d said Dr. O\u017eegovi\u0107-Oru\u010devi\u0107.<\/p>\n
Through the exchange of knowledge and clinical experience among experts from various medical disciplines, the symposium \u2018Modern Challenges in Pulmonary Oncology\u2019 conveyed a clear message: the fight against lung cancer requires a combination of advanced medical approaches, multidisciplinary collaboration, and strong social responsibility.<\/p>\n
