The signing of a contract today for the procurement of a PET/CT scanner marks a major step forward in improving diagnostic and treatment services for oncology patients.

The Director of UKC Tuzla, Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, emphasized that this investment is among the most significant projects for the institution and represents only one segment of a comprehensive plan aimed at strengthening medical infrastructure and expanding access to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.

“Today, we signed a contract for the procurement of a PET/CT scanner with a total value of approximately KM 9.2 million, including VAT. According to data from the Health Insurance and Reinsurance Institute of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, during 2025 patients from the Tuzla Canton were referred to other centers in Bosnia and Herzegovina for PET/CT examinations, resulting in expenditures of more than KM 1.1 million. During that period, approximately 480 PET/CT examinations were performed. The acquisition of our own PET/CT scanner will significantly improve the availability of these services, reduce waiting times, and facilitate faster diagnosis and treatment planning for oncology patients. This investment represents a major benefit for our patients and is only one of a series of planned procurements of state-of-the-art medical equipment intended to further enhance the quality of healthcare services provided at the University Clinical Center Tuzla,” said Prof. Dr. Umihanić.

As previously announced, the Government of Tuzla Canton has allocated KM 30 million in the 2026 Budget for the University Clinical Center Tuzla. Of this amount, KM 3.5 million is designated for the repayment of the loan related to the construction of the Blue Hospital building, while the remaining more than KM 26 million will be invested in the procurement of modern medical equipment.

Director of UKC Tuzla, Prof. Dr. Šekib Umihanić, emphasized that a number of important projects are currently underway and that the planned investments will significantly enhance the institution’s diagnostic and therapeutic capacities. “In addition to the procurement of a PET/CT scanner, procedures are underway for the acquisition of an additional linear accelerator, new angio suites, and a state-of-the-art Photon Counting CT (PCCT) scanner. We are also planning the purchase of a large number of endoscopic systems and other medical instruments essential for providing high-quality healthcare services. I would particularly like to highlight the planned installation of solar panels at the University Clinical Center Tuzla, which will contribute to greater energy efficiency and long-term sustainability of the institution. The entire remaining amount of more than KM 26 million will be invested in these projects, and we expect the relevant procurement procedures to be completed in the coming days and weeks. This is one of a series of major development projects being implemented by the Government of Tuzla Canton for the benefit of the University Clinical Center Tuzla and, above all, for the insured persons and patients who rely on our services,” said Director Umihanić.

The Minister of Health of Tuzla Canton, Dušanka Bećirović, emphasized that the procurement of a PET/CT scanner represents a major advancement for both the University Clinical Center Tuzla and the healthcare system of Tuzla Canton. “To say that this is a significant achievement would be an understatement. This is an exceptionally important project, particularly for oncology patients. For the first time in its history, the University Clinical Center Tuzla will acquire and install a PET/CT scanner. This means that our oncology patients, despite the challenges of a serious illness, will have access to high- quality and more accessible healthcare services, as they will no longer need to travel to Mostar, Sarajevo, or Zenica to undergo this diagnostic examination,” said Minister Bećirović.

The introduction of a PET/CT scanner at UKC Tuzla will enable this highly sophisticated diagnostic procedure to be performed within the institution for the first time. This will significantly improve the availability of diagnostic services, shorten waiting times, reduce the costs associated with referring patients to other healthcare centers, and facilitate faster diagnosis and treatment planning.

The University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC Tuzla) continues the most extensive investment cycle in the modernization of medical equipment in recent years.
