This year's World Health Organization (WHO) campaign slogan is “Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down.”<\/p>\n
The main objective of World Hepatitis Day is to raise public awareness about the prevention, early detection, and treatment of viral hepatitis, while striving to reduce the number of new infections and achieve the complete elimination of the disease as a public health threat by 2030.<\/p>\n
Hepatitis remains a major global public health challenge, particularly because the disease often progresses without symptoms. Each year, hepatitis-related infections are responsible for an estimated 1.5 to 2 million deaths worldwide. Long- term untreated infection can lead to severe liver damage, and testing for hepatitis B and C is the only way to ensure timely diagnosis.<\/p>\n
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is estimated that approximately 50,000 people are living with chronic hepatitis B or C infection.<\/p>\n
According to statistics from the Health Insurance and Reinsurance Institute of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, between 30 and 80 new cases of hepatitis B and 21 to 34 new cases of hepatitis C are diagnosed annually.<\/p>\n
At the University Clinical Center Tuzla, 120 patients are currently receiving treatment for hepatitis B and C. Each year, the institution registers approximately 12 newly diagnosed cases of hepatitis C infection.<\/p>\n
On the occasion of this year's World Hepatitis Day, an educational lecture entitled “The Importance of Preventing Viral Hepatitis B and C” was held at the Education Center of the Clinic for Infectious Diseases of the University Clinical Center Tuzla. The lecture was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jasminka Petrovi\u0107.<\/p>\n
The lecture was intended for healthcare professionals and provided the latest information on contemporary approaches to the detection, prevention, and control of viral hepatitis.<\/p>\n
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jasminka Petrovi\u0107 approximately 500 million people worldwide are living with chronic hepatitis B or C infection. Certain types of viral hepatitis are highly transmissible, making screening essential for identifying chronic carriers and individuals with active disease. Treating these patients helps prevent further transmission of hepatitis and eliminates sources of infection.<\/p>\n
“Every year, the Clinic for Infectious Diseases of the University Clinical Center Tuzla carries out a range of activities aimed at combating viral hepatitis, including free testing and counseling, public awareness and educational campaigns, as well as medical conferences, symposia, and round table discussions. Owing to broader screening coverage, we have observed a slight increase in the incidence of hepatitis B and C. Given that these infections can remain asymptomatic for many years, I would like to emphasize the importance of raising public awareness about vaccination, which is the safest and most effective protection against viral hepatitis, providing lifelong immunity in more than 95% of cases,” emphasized Assoc.
