The anesthesia team at the University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC Tuzla) today performed spinal surgery on a patient with multiple comorbidities under epidural anesthesia, a decision made in light of the patient's general health condition.<\/p>\n
According to anesthesiology and resuscitation specialist Dr. Fatima Iljazagi\u0107 Halilovi\u0107, spinal surgeries are rarely performed under epidural anesthesia alone, general anesthesia is the standard practice, and until now this approach had never been used at UKC Tuzla.<\/p>\n
Dr. Iljazagi\u0107 Halilovi\u0107 explains that patients undergoing this type of surgery have traditionally been placed under general anesthesia, which requires intubation, mechanical ventilation, and positioning the patient prone, a more demanding anesthetic course that also exposes the patient to larger doses of opioids.<\/p>\n
With today's approach, the use of epidural anesthesia eliminates the need for opioids, and the patient remains awake, alert, and oriented throughout the procedure. An additional benefit is that a local anesthetic mixture is administered through the epidural catheter, providing long-lasting analgesia for up to 24 hours.<\/p>\n
Dr. Iljazagi\u0107 Halilovi\u0107 also emphasizes that the general advantage of regional anesthesia over general anesthesia is a significantly lower risk of complications and much faster postoperative and overall recovery.<\/p>\n
“I must emphasize how pleased we are to have performed today's spinal surgery under epidural anesthesia. Regional analgesia, or anesthesia, has until now been used daily in gynecology, abdominal surgery, and urology, and I hope that from now on this will become standard practice for spinal surgery as well,” said Dr. Iljazagi\u0107 Halilovi\u0107. She added that UKC Tuzla's Clinic for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation has also been operating a Pain Therapy Clinic since March of this year, established with the aim of reducing or completely eliminating pain in patients.<\/p>\n
“By opening the Pain Therapy Clinic, our goal was to focus on the patient, enabling them to reduce or completely eliminate their pain. At the clinic, we conduct examinations and assess the intensity and characteristics of pain, based on which an individual treatment plan is created for each patient.
