Once again, the University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC Tuzla) is joining the global campaign marking September 21st as World Alzheimer's Day, aiming to inform the general public about early symptom recognition, diagnosis, and treatment.<\/p>\n
According to Asst. Prof. Dr. Denisa Salihovi\u0107, a neurology specialist, Alzheimer's disease is not merely about memory loss, it transforms the lives of those affected, as well as the lives of those closest to them. “Today, we remind everyone that behind every forgotten name, question, or memory lies a person, their story, and a family navigating the disease alongside them. More understanding. Less stigma. More support. Timely recognition, diagnosis, and support can make a significant difference. Let us not forget those who are forgetting,” said Asst. Prof. Dr. Salihovi\u0107.<\/p>\n
Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease usually develop gradually, making it difficult for both patients and their families to pinpoint the exact onset of the illness.<\/p>\n
“Initially, the patient forgets ordinary things, then appointments and obligations, and finally, very important facts of daily life. The primary problem lies in the ability to retain new information. In the subsequent stage, they fail to recall the names of close relatives and friends, phone numbers, professions, educational backgrounds, or even their own children; they bridge these memory gaps with confabulations, that is, fabricated events,” explains Asst. Prof. Dr. Salihovi\u0107. She adds that, over time, such patients struggle with spatial orientation, and their speech slows down due to an inability to find the right words. In the advanced stage of the disease, patients experience difficulty swallowing, as well as a loss of sphincter control and postural reflexes, eventually becoming bedridden.<\/p>\n
Precise diagnostic classification of patients with dementia is essential for ensuring appropriate treatment, providing information on prognosis and potential genetic risks, and organizing patient care.<\/p>\n
Treating Alzheimer's disease is a highly complex task. The medications used enhance cholinergic transmission and have a proven positive effect in reducing cognitive impairment in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.<\/p>\n
Since individuals with Alzheimer's disease cannot live independently, requiring care from family members, professional services, or placement in specialized institutions, they represent not only a medical issue but also a significant social and economic challenge for society.
