A team of orthopedics surgeons from the Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma, University Clinical Center Tuzla has recently performed complex spinal correction surgery. Respectively, they removed the incorrectly developed spinal vertebra and made spinal deformity correction.<\/p>\n
Ass. Prof. Aleksandar Vujadinovi\u0107, M.D., head of the Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma, hemivertebra excision was done in a sixteen-year-old patient from Konjic in which the abnormal vertebra was removed. As doctor Vujadinovi\u0107 explained, this is the spine surgery of congenital scoliosis that occurs due to a disorder in the development of a certain part of the spine, specifically vertebras. The disorder occurs in the period between the 4th<\/sup> and the 6th<\/sup> week of intrauterine development, and it cannot be predicted or prevented. Over time as the body grows and the spinal column elongates, the deformity also increases. For the first time we have performed surgical cutting and removing that vertebra by correcting scoliosis along the way, to a feasible extent at this age of patient. This was a high risk surgery due to possible adverse neurological outcomes and immobility of the lower extremities, and we had to informed the patient and family about the possible risks. Intraoperative and postoperative course were uneventful, so we are pleased with outcome, explained Ass.
